3 Best Types of Lawn Grass for Orlando

3 Best Types of Lawn Grass for Orlando, Florida

What is The Best Lawn Grass For Orlando, Florida?
Not every type of grass grows well in Orlando, Florida. The temperature in summer can go incredibly high, so not all types of grass can survive. As a homeowner, you want to find the best lawn grass to grow at your residence.

Here are different types of grass and options

1. St. Augustine

This is perhaps the most widely used turfgrass used by homeowners in Orlando. It is widely used by many people because this type of grass is widely adapted to warm subtropical climates. St. Augustine turf also can tolerate salty conditions, such as being grown near coastal locations.

You will notice that the blades of St. Augustine grass are flat and broad with a greenish-blue color. This grass grows well in most types of soil. However, one thing you need to keep in mind is that it grows rapidly and will need to be cut weekly during the growing season. Keep in mind that if you want a healthy and lush lawn of St. Augustine grass, then you will have to water, mow, and fertilize the grass accurately. St. Augustine also has issues with chinch bugs, lawn caterpillars, mole crickets, and various fungus and disease issues including take-all root rot, and large patch fungus. St. Augustine turf does require quite a bit of care from the homeowner, and the fertilization and pest control provider.

2. Bahiagrass

Bahiagrass is another option for Orlando homeowners. That is because this type of grass is considered to be fairly low maintenance. You will not have to spend a ton of time watering or fertilizing this type of turf. The grass does not grow well in shaded areas and is sensitive to overwatering. Even during conditions of drought, Bahiagrass will go dormant until their preferred conditions return. Bahiagrass has a fairly extensive root system and only a few pest issues, mainly mole crickets. Not all pesticide products are suitable for being used on Bahiagrass, so you need to be careful, or you can end up ruining the grass. Bahia is also an open growth habit turf, therefore, weeds will be an ongoing issue to some extent. Bahiagrass is typically grown on roadways and pastures to prevent erosion and/or for a grazing option for cattle. Many HOA’s do not allow Bahia turf to be utilized inside their communities.

3. Zoysia Grass

Zoysia turf varieties were introduced into the United States from Asia and provide attractive turf throughout much of the United States. In recent years, considerable improvements in zoysia cultivars have been made by turfgrass breeders. These improvements include insect resistance, acceleration, establishment, and overall performance. Zoysia cultivars grow fairly well in a variety of soil types and have good tolerance to shade, salt, and traffic. They provide an extremely dense sod that resists weed invasion, but certain pests can be problematic. Hunting billbugs, mealybugs, and mole crickets are all known pests of zoysia.

Large patch fungus is also very common in zoysia turf. Contrary to popular belief, zoysia turf does in fact need to be watered to be healthy and aesthetically pleasing. The amount of water needed to keep zoysia healthy is roughly the same amount of water needed by Saint Augustine turf. One positive thing about zoysia, if it does enter drought stress, it is not known to be infested with chinch bugs like St. Augustine turf.

Final Words
Once you have chosen the ideal turf grass for your home lawn, you need to maintain it so it can stay green and lush for a long time to come. Different types of grass require different fertilization, pest control, mowing, and watering requirements. There are a myriad of different pests and/or diseases that can and will destroy your turf if left unchecked.
